Gillian Anderson Interested in Reprising Scully Role in X-Files Reboot

If director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) gets his way and helms a future The X-Files reboot, we may get to see Dr. Dana Scully return in some fashion.

During an interview on Today this morning, Gillian Anderson expressed extreme interest in working with the “brilliant” director. When asked if she would want to be involved in the potential reboot, Anderson said, “It’s so funny because for most of my life since I finished The X-Files, every interview I do, people have asked, and the answer has always been, ‘Nope, not going to happen.’ Now, Ryan Coogler, who is the director of Black Panther – brilliant, brilliant director – has approached Chris Carter to say that he wants to do a take on it, and I cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen.”

“Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing,” she continues. “But in his hands, I’m not saying no, because I think he is really cool. I think if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well, and maybe I’ll pop in for a little something something.”

No official announcement has been made about an X-Files reboot yet, but last March, creator Chris Carter admitted Coogler’s interest in the project during an interview with CBC’s Gloria Macarenko. When asked how Carter would approach a current reboot of The X-Files, he said, “We’re so steeped in conspiracy theories now, you know? The X-Files dealt with a central conspiracy, but now the world is so full of conspiracies that I think it’d be a different show. Actually, I just spoke to a young man – Ryan Coogler – who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast, so he’s got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory.”

What makes this even more possible is the fact that Coogler signed a five-year deal with Disney, who currently holds the rights to The X-Files, in 2021. Perhaps, after Coogler finishes his mysterious vampire film starring Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo and his Black Panther spinoff series for Disney+ series, he can find the time to reimagine The X-Files for a new generation.
