Exorcist: Deceiver Pulled from Schedule and Seeking New Director

In news that we predicted back in October, Universal has officially pulled the next chapter of The Exorcist from its release schedule for 2025 and director David Gordon Green has left the project, while Blumhouse and Universal search for someone else to take the helm. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news Thursday stating that Green is focusing on Nutcrackers, a feature film starring Ben Stiller, and the fourth season of The Righteous Gemstones for HBO.

Exorcist: Deceiver was slated for release April 18, 2025, but after the critical and financial failure of Exorcist: Believer last October, the series’ continuation was thought skeptical at best. After purchasing the rights to the storied horror franchise for a reported $400 million, Universal and Blumhouse announced a trilogy of films similar to how they handled the Halloween franchise beginning in 2018. After only earning $136.2 million at the international box office, this may turn into the biggest bombs of Green’s career, with many fans stating that he “ruined” the Exorcist franchise just like he did Halloween.

Is this the first nail in the Exorcist coffin? We’ll be following this story closely for updates.
