Christopher Landon Drops Directing Duties for Scream VII

It seems like the next installment in the Scream franchise keeps slipping further and further away. Director Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky) has stepped from behind the camera for the Scream VII, leaving the future of the film in a tumultuous state.

Landon dropped the news on X Saturday.

I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on, I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.

The departure is the latest in a string that include stars of the last two films including Melissa Barrera, who was fired in October, and Jenna Ortega, who left voluntarily. Screenwriter James Vanderbilt remains and must find a way to move forward without relying on two popular characters from Scream (2022) and Scream VI.

Scream VII was originally thought to slash its way into theaters in late 2024, but that looks less likely now, and may be delayed indefinitely.
