Mike Flanagan Joins Blumhouse’s Exorcist with Radical New Take

The rumors started a couple of weeks ago, but now Variety confirms the news: Mike Flanagan will write, direct, and produce Blumhouse’s next The Exorcist film.

Flanagan’s take on the material is said to be a “radical new take,” rather than follow in the disastrous footsteps of The Exorcist: Believer from David Gordon Green in 2023. Green was originally brought on to direct a trilogy of new tales, beginning with Believer, but left the franchise in January after the first film turned into a critical bomb.

The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe,” Flanagan said. “Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.”

Flanagan’s previous films which he wrote and directed for Blumhouse include Oculus in 2013, as well as Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil both in 2016.

“Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse,” said Jason Blum, founder and CEO. “I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it.”

We’re just glad to hear he is not continuing that horrible storyline from Believer and going in a whole new direction. At least, that gives us a little hope.
