New Friday the 13th Movie At Least Three Years Away

It seems that Friday the 13th may not grace the silver screen anytime soon, if the original director/producer knows what he’s talking about.

While participating in a panel at Texas Frightmare Weekend last week, Sean Cunningham shared the stage with original Friday the 13th star Adrienne King and special effects master Tom Savini. Of course, a member of the audience asked when we may get a new movie, now that the legal rights seem to be settled, as much as they can be, anyway.

According to a report from Creepy Catalog, Cunningham “said that the major obstacle holding back a new Friday the 13th film is the reluctance of a movie studio to risk putting money into a horror project that might not see a huge return on its investment.”

“In the post-pandemic world where movie-watching habits are changing, especially for movies released in theaters, studios like New Line (who own the rights to the Friday the 13th movies) aren’t necessarily willing to provide a substantial budget for a horror movie,” the report continues. “At least, not for one they’re not reasonably certain will do well in theaters.”

We will eventually get another Friday the 13th film, but it may be “at least three years,” according to Cunningham. He did confirm something we reported last year: a new Friday the 13th video game is in the works, but no details were announced at the convention.

Cross your fingers and toes and if anyone knows anybody at New Line, smack some sense into them for all of us!
